Advising

Degree Plan Advising

All students are required to have an approved and up-to-date Degree Plan on file with the ITP office. The Degree Plan is intended to help students select courses that suit the student's interests, provide a coherent plan of study, and meet the requirements of the certificate or degree(s) the student is seeking. The Degree Plan is not a guarantee that given courses will be offered during a particular semester or that the student will be able to enroll in specific courses. Students are encouraged to keep track of the schedule and make changes to their degree plans as appropriate. However, degree requirements may change during your time in ITP and having an approved Degree Plan on file with the ITP office will help avoid surprises at graduation time.

Independent Study Advising

Students may undertake an independent study course by mutual agreement with any faculty member for up to (i.e., no more than) 3 credit hours per semester, and no more than 5 credit hours per degree plan. Independent study is not to be used as a replacement for core requirements unless approved by either the Associate Faculty Director or the Faculty Director. Such approvals are rarely granted. If you plan to take an Independent Study, please return this signed form to the ITP office.

Research Advising

Each Master's student undertakes a significant research project as part of either a Capstone or Thesis project. Any faculty member can serve as a Capstone advisor. Faculty members that have the appropriate appointment to serve as Thesis advisors are identified on their description pages. The department is happy to consider requests to add Thesis advising appointments for any faculty member. To initiate the process, please ask that faculty member to contact the Faculty Director.
