Prospective Course Description

TLEN5600: Telecommunications Seminar

Course Description

Designed to expose ITP students, faculty, alumni, friends and the general community to a wide range of speakers from industry, government and academia. Topics will cover a variety of disciplines including business, marketing, sales, economics, political science, engineering, operational implementation, consulting, public policy and regulation. The presentations will cover a wide range of interests in the ITP multi-disciplinary program including technology, policy, management, business and economics.

Learning Objectives

The course seeks to expand the business, technical and professional perspectives of the students who take it. They acquire a greater appreciation of the intricacies of the Telecommunications industry and are required to report back on their newly developed viewpoints in a concise and comprehensive manner. It provides them with an opportunity to interact with presenters who are currently practicing in industry and assists them in building their professional networks.

Measurable Outcomes and Graded Deliverables

Exams

There is no formal examination for this course, all the graded submissions are made during the course of the semester.

Assignments

Papers - 40% of final grade.

(In-class students will submit 6 papers [200-500 words], and CAETE students will submit 8 similar papers. Each paper will be a letter addressed to a presenter from this semester's class. Each letter will briefly thank the presenter for talking with the class and highlight points of interest that arose from the presentation. Note: Students should consider these letters as an opportunity to improve their writing and build their professional network. After receiving the instructor's feedback, students are strongly encouraged to send these letters to the speakers in question.)

Presentation - 30% of final grade.

(All students will prepare a ten-minute presentation that covers any topic of their choice. Students will make their presentations during the last three class sessions, and the presentations will be critiqued by other students and by the instructors. In preparation for the presentations, all students are expected to review various presentation materials that will be posted on CULearn and made available in class. CAETE students will be required to record a ten-minute presentation by video and send it to the class for viewing. All students will upload their presentation slides and/or scripts to CULearn. Presentations will be graded in accordance with forms and processes that will be discussed in class.)

Argument Introduction - 30% of final grade.

(All students will write an introduction to an argument. The introduction will be roughly 200-500 words in length. Students will select an argument topic based on the topics discussed during classroom or SFTC presentations. Introductions will follow the guidelines posted to CULearn, and final introductions will be due at the end of the semester. Introductions that earn a grade in the A to B range will contain a contestable, interesting thesis and will be clear, persuasive, well-structured, well-written, and stylistically compelling.)

Internet and e-mail access. Students will access course materials using CULearn. Go to culearn.colorado.edu for logon information and browser settings. Web browser with streaming video capability will be required to access the course electronically.

Bio: Jill Van Matre has a joint appointment with the Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program and the School of Law. Ms. Van Matre is a Research Fellow with the Silicon Flatirons Telecommunications Program. She is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Law, and a member of the Colorado Bar Association. Prior to law school, Ms. Van Matre worked for Lucent Technologies and Microsoft Corporation.
